not sure whether to get JVC GRD770US, CANON ZR800, SAMSUNG SCD372 or the Sony mini dv, Any practical suggestions?

These are all consumer grade camcorders and there will be very little difference in the durability or quality of them. Take reasonable care of them and you will easily get your money’s worth from any one of them.

they’re camcorders. i just want a basic one, not to too fancy nor expensive, but i want good video quality, and will last long. i found them at circuitcity.com
please help me, im going to vacation so i need camcorder badly, and they’re both cheap!!!

on specs i would say the jvc would win out.

the reviews for the samsung are not as favorable.

I am having trouble deciding which will get the best quality and which is more flexible in low light.

I own a Sharp VL-Z1 & a Samsung VP-D362 for MiniDV media.

I own a Panasonic SDR-S7, Silvercrest DV-767, Digilife DV-1000HD & a Enova DV33 for Flash/SD

Generally speaking, the video storage media has little to do with low-light video capture and video quality. That responsibility is with the lens diameter (larger allows more light onto the imaging chip(s)) and the imaging chip(s) (larger allows more light to be processed).

And, generally, "best video quality" comes from least digital video compression – in the consumer cam environment, this is typically miniDV tape recording DV-format video.

That said, there will also be trade-offs related to the video format captured. Standard definition video is 480 horizontal lines. Anything less than this will be quality less than standard def. Anything higher (usually 720 or 1080 for consumer cams) is considered "high definition". Under good lighting conditions, the video from a high definition camcorder will look great. Generally, consumer high definition camera will not do as well under low light as standard def cameras…

i was going to get mini dv, which goes on the tapes, but i thought i’d up grade to dvd.

so for camera experts, or own this camera
hows the quality?
is it easy to put on your pc?
can it go in windows movie maker?
and how much does the quality decrease after you upload your video to youtube?(tough question to answer i know)
and if you have a video filmed with this camera, send me link, or if you just know alot about camcorders, i would love to know how this one performs.

I returned this camcorder and bought the Pansonic MiniDV Camera (PV-GS85). The Samsung felt great in my hands and I liked the idea of burning it to a DVD, but it was much more irritating than I thought for a first camcorder. The quality of the video looked worse than my digital camera! Everytime I tried to get it in Windows Movie Maker, I got errors, which I do not with the Pansonic. I took the Samsung back, and I am soooooooooo happy I did. I have already uploaded video to my computer with the Pansonic, edited it in ways that you cannot with a miniDVD without a lot of software, and burned it to a disc.

If you must get a miniDVD, consumer reports has some recommendations:
MiniDVD

• Hitachi DZ-GX5020A
• Canon DC230

For MiniDV
• Panasonic PV-GS80
• Sony DCR-HC28
• Canon ZR800

Hard Drive

• Panasonic SDR-H18

Hybrid

• Hitachi DZ-HS300A

Keep in mind that you can get the same basic model but get a higher end one. That is what I did instead of the 80 I got the 85.

I have bought and returned 3 camcorders in the past two days because i can not upload the videos to my computer! I call the companies and they tell me the software that comes with the video cameras (JVC, Samsung, Aiptek) is for only to upload pictures, and that i have to buy different software and firewire stuff. I just want a video camera that i can upload the videos to my laptop with that i dont have to buy extra software for!

Sony has a camcorder that burns directly to a mini-dvd. Once you finalize the disc, you can put it into virtually any computer that as a DVD-rom. To put the video on your computer at that point is drag and drop.

Panasonic has one as well. Avoid that one because they use a dvd format this is mostly retired.
